Royal Enfield’s Himalayan takes the popular motorcycle manufacturer on a new ride. The Himalayan is an all new product from the RE, with a new engine, new look and an all new purpose. It is the first adventure tourer bike aimed specifically for rides in the mighty Himalayas. The company itself needs no introduction as it is amongst the most reputed brands in the industry and its products are highly anticipated and most sought after as well. Himalayan is the most versatile bike from the manufacturer, suitable for both rocky and plain terrains.
RE is known for its minimalist design features and the same is true for the Himalayan as well. The company says it wants to focus more on the industrial design rather than trying anything too flashy. Talking about its looks, it sports a round headlight, round mirrors and a tall windscreen at the front. There’s a wee rack behind which is very useful when taking pillions out for a ride. The LED tail light adds to the glamorous look while sitting under the metal grab rail which can also be used as a mount for tail bag.
In terms of technical equipment, Himalayan has all the necessary instruments including the speedometer tachometer and fuel gauge, a digital gear and side-stand indicator, average speed display, two trip meters, clock, temperature gauge and a compass as well. The bike has an all new, air-cooled 411cc single cylinder engine labeled as LS410. It has a maximum power of 24.5 BHP @ 6500 rpm but then above 5500 rpm you can feel the vibrations getting stronger and stronger. While gaining speed above 95kmph can be shaky, maintaining those speeds will be relatively easy thanks to the improved engine abilities.
The Himalayan has a decent overall mileage of about 30kmpl. It is aided with a 15L Fuel tank, enough to cover 400-500km as claimed by the brand. It works on 5 speed gearbox with a carburetor fuel supply that comes along with a throttle position sensor. Another significant feature is the rear mono-shock, a first for a RE bike, that aids handling and offers a plush ride. The Himalayan is supposed to run smooth on any kind of terrain and its suspension capabilities have been fine tuned to deliver the same.
Just as the suspension, the handling department too, is impressive. Riding on the worst of terrains like dirt, broken roads, non-existent roads and even snow, is a cakewalk for the Himalayan. The CEAT tyres further enhance the riding experience with its superior grip which is aptly supported by the brilliant suspension setup. The brakes, especially the front brake, works great irrespective of the terrain, wet tarmac included.
Overall, one can say that RE’s Himalayan suits the bill perfectly, for it’s a value for money ride. Its price of 1.55L is worth it, specifically for motorcycle lovers who love driving on challenging and engaging roads. As the genre of adventure touring is gaining more popularity in the country, RE has struck the right chord with a brilliant product that only boasts of a great design but is rich in technical specifications as well.
