10 Things You Must Know About Ebola Virus

Ebola is the most recent viral disease, which has broken out in West Africa and attained epidemic proportions. According to the World Health Organization, this deadly infection has already killed more than 900 people in the region. Awareness can go a long way in preventing occurrence of this killer disease, which makes it essential to keep a tab on some specific facts about Ebola disease.

1. What Exactly is Ebola Virus?

Ebola is a deadly virus, which causes a disease called Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which was established in Africa in 1976 for the first time. The killer disease kills 90% of the people who are infected by it, which makes it even more dangerous.

2. Regions Affected by Ebola Epidemic:

West Africa has been most severely affected by this epidemic called Ebola viral disease, the outbreak beginning in March 2014. The countries included in this region are Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

3. Symptoms of Ebola Disease:

The fatal disease is characterized by initial symptoms such as fever, headache, sore throat, joint and muscular pains, which may aggravate into diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain at later stages. Some victims may show signs such as redness of eyes, skin rashes and external/internal bleeding. A blood test can be used to diagnose this virus.

4. Spread of Ebola Virus:

The virus is believed to be spread by an infected animal to human beings. The further spread to other human being has taken place through blood, saliva, mucus, sweat and other secretions. It can be transmitted sexually or through infected needles. Dogs, monkey, pigs and bats could harbor this virus.

5. Spread to Other Countries:

According to health officials, there is no chance of spread of Ebola disease to other countries. Rather, the cause of its spread in African countries is lack of health care. WHO representatives are taking care to prevent transmission of the disease to other parts of the world.

6. Death Toll of Ebola Virus:

A total of 1711 cases of the disease were registered in West Africa, out of which nearly 932 were fatal. Nearly 60 health care workers have fallen prey to the disease, while treating the victims. Two US citizens have also been infected and are under treatment at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta.

7. Prevention of Ebola Disease:

It is suggested that one should avoid traveling to the infected regions to prevent transmission of disease. In case one suspects infection due to contact with an infected person, immediate medical assistance should be sought. Hygiene and sanitation is also very important.

8. Ebola Vaccination:

There is no vaccination for the disease yet. However, scientists are working at developing some formulas, which have to be tested before showing any guarantee.

9. Treatment of Ebola Disease:

The disease lacks a definite cure till date, but victims are given intravenous fluids to manage body temperature, blood pressure and oxygen levels in the body. The disease can be very painful.

10. No Risk to US Population:

In general, the population of the US or any other country for that matter, is not at direct risk of contracting this disease, unless he has been in directly contact with an infected person.
Since no tangible cure has been established for Ebola virus till now, efforts must be made to prevent its spread to other countries of the world.
